The fallacy of a just world and domestic abuse

Nearly a year ago, I wrote a post on the Just World Phenomena and its relation to victim blaming. In the light of the Abedini situation and other cases of abuse that have come to light, this theory is worth revisiting. In a nutshell, we assume the world is a just system that runs according to a set of rules. Therefore if we follow the rules correctly, we will achieve the desired outcome and get what we deserve. But what happens when the system fails? How do we respond when we witness injustice and in particular, when we witness people getting what they do  not deserve? 1 According to this theory. injustice causes the victim to suffer. But it also causes a sense of suffering in the viewer. To alleviate our discomfort, we can go to the aid of the victim or we can revise our opinion of the victim to maintain our belief that the world is "just." 2  If condition A prevents consequence B, but B happened to the victim, then she did not follow the rules. She brought it on hers...

The Ideal American Woman of the 19th Century

There has been some lively discussion in social media over the extent that headship and submission go beyond the home to opposite-gender interaction in general. For the record, I affirm male elders in the church. I believe Ephesians 5:22-33 still applies to marriage today. But I do not believe that the human race should be divided ontologically by gender into those who lead and those who follow. Being made in the image of God, which does include gender, is much more complex than that. I am also concerned that practices, which would fall under the heading of Christian liberty, are taught as principles, thus binding the consciences of believers. Therefore, I concur with the concerns of the folks at the Mortification of Spin. (Read the posts here:  Aimee #1 , Carl , Todd , Carl #2 , Aimee #2 ) I especially appreciate Aimee sticking her neck out and writing about this issue. I've had many concerns over the years, but I've been a chicken about expressing them. Maybe I haven't ...

Links: Genesis 3:16 and the extent of submission

Because I can't seem to close this can of worms, here are links to two papers that survey different views of Genesis 3:16 and the scope of marital submission. Both are written by evangelical, non-egalitarians. Genesis 3:16 - The Pronouncement on Eve by Les Galicinski, M.Div. (ht: A Cry for Justice) This paper has a helpful diagram that lists the theologian and his/her interpretation of Genesis 3:16. Of note, the author does not agree with Susan Foh's recent interpretation but believes that desire is a  desire for her husband. He also cites John Piper and Wayne Grudem as differing from the Foh view, which I find surprising as I was under the impression that CBMW promotes her interpretation. But I may be wrong. What Does "Submit in Everything" Mean? The Nature and Scope of Marital Submission by Steven Tracy, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Ethics at Phoenix Seminary. Published: Trinity Journal (TrinJ) 29 (2008) pp. 285-312 Dr. Tracy discusses the differe...
