A house by any other name...

Our new house isn't very architecturally interesting.  It's just one of the thousands of brick ranchers that were built in the early '60s, but we think it deserves its own name.

Casa Calvin? Chez Calvinist? Maison Manton? Puritan Pad?

I proposed Dordt House which was immediately vetoed by my daughter as being too strange.  I then suggested Reformation Ranch, but she said it sounded like a Calvinist salad dressing (made with only 5 ingredients!)   Dead Guys' Bungalow?  The name sounds like the title of a Nancy Drew mystery.  Tulip Ranch?  But we have no tulips until we plant some in the fall.  Also when I think of ranch, cattle come to mind, so I have a mental image of herds of black and white spotted tulips mooing and grazing on the prairie.

But after some deliberation, we have chosen Providence House.

In the last three years, my eyes were opened to God's providence and sovereignty.  I'm still learning to gladly receive whatever He has decreed, but even in my struggles, I am grateful for this bedrock on which to rest. This name is very fitting, because we are in this house, in this neighborhood, in our church, in this new phase of our lives according to His kind providence.

So in keeping with this theme, I would like to frame this quote and hang it by the front door:

"How Providence will dispose of my life, liberty, and labours for time to come, I know not; but I cheerfully commit all to Him who has hitherto performed all things for me."

~ The Mystery of Providence by John Flavel, Banner of Truth, page 218.

  1. What I wonderful idea. I think that is fantastic. Providence House is a wonderful name and I love the quote.

I am going to talk to Irene about naming our house and posting a plaque. Thanks!

  2. Ours is a 60's ranch and we are only the second set of owners. I love the compact (relatively speaking) tidiness of this style home.

I've never named a house before (although I do name my sewing machines!) and very much like the name you've chosen.

  3. I agree with your daughter about "Reformation Ranch." Does sound like a salad dressing. Perhaps that would be a good name for your own recipe of dressing :)

  4. Gregg: If you and Irene come up with a name, please post it.

Whitestone: The previous of owner of our house lived here from 1962-2009. Most people comment "It's so much bigger than it looks on the outside.", so the design is very efficient.

Kim: My daughter was trying to come up with 5 ingredients for a dressing that would follow TULIP. I don't think it will work. :-)

  5. What a truly delightful post! I love it! You're house is quite charming in my opinion. I love the idea of naming homes too and have often thought of naming ours - It is common in the old European homes, large or small - so why not here too?

From what I'm gathering on the Internet, God has been revealing to many Christians more of His true character in His sovereign being in the past couple of years. Something's going on...and as Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing"! Praise Him!

Thank you for a day brightener!

    Blessings on you today sister!
