Review - Galatians For You

Galatians For You, Timothy Keller, The Good Book Company, 2013, 208 pages.

Galatians For You by Dr. Timothy Keller is the first title in the God's Word For You series published by The Good Book Company.  This book isn't intended to be a commentary but an expository guide that unfolds the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ in Paul's letter to the Galatians. In each chapter, Dr. Keller unpacks the text verse by verse. His writing is clear and accessible. The passages are explained in their historical context, but he also includes practical application for us today.

The only people I can think of who wouldn't benefit from this book are believers who are never tempted to revert to legalism and works righteousness. But for the rest of us who haven't reached that blessed state, Keller's exposition of the gospel is very helpful especially when "gospel" is becoming just another buzzword. He contrasts the true gospel with religions legalism and cultural liberalism. He also deals with the relationship between law and gospel and the law's relationship to the believer. In addition, key doctrines such as justification and sanctification are clearly defined. The recent controversy between the historical interpretation of justification and the New Perspectives on Paul, which the author briefly addresses in the appendix, is a perfect example of why the truth in Galatians is vital for all believers.

Galatians For You would be a valuable resource for anyone who needs to be reminded of the gospel. This book could be used for personal Bible study, group study, or family devotions. Each chapter contains several reflection questions. A glossary of unfamiliar terms is included as well.

I received a copy of this book from Cross Focused Reviews and The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.

This is the humbling truth that lies at the heart of Christianity. We love to be our own saviors. Our hearts love to manufacture glory for themselves. So we find messages of self-salvation extremely attractive, whether they are religious (Keep these rules and you earn eternal blessing) or secular (Grab hold of these things and you'll experience blessing now). The gospel comes and turns them all upside down. It says: You are in such a hopeless position that you need a rescue that has nothing to do with you at all. And then it says: God in Jesus provides a rescue which gives you far more than any false salvation your heart may love to chase.

Paul reminds us that in the gospel we are both brought lower and raised higher than we can imagine. And the glory for that rightly, all goes to "our God and Father...for ever and ever. Amen". (pg. 17)
