I did not ring in the New Year. I was tired after a long day of tackling the last room in the house. It was good to be in bed by 11:30 PM. If there were fireworks, I slept through them.
I am behind one session in school, so I could have started the next unit. However, reading about the gastrointestinal system didn't seem like a very festive thing for New Year's eve. I ended up reading theology with the bunny and playing some Brahms on the piano which was quite relaxing.
I have decided to pare down the number of books I am trying to read at the same time. Due to life, my reading time is reduced. I try to squeeze it in whenever I can, but it's hard to pick up a book and get back into the flow of the author's thoughts. Therefore, I am going to finish the book on Calvin and Holiness by J.C. Ryle. I am eager to start Spiritual Depression by Lloyd-Jones. After reading reviews from other bloggers (Thank you, Kim & John), I think this will be a very helpful book. The other book I've started is Words Old and New by Horatius Bonar, which is one of the treasures I found in my dad's book collection. It is a collection of quotes from the early church fathers to saints in the middle 1800's.
I intend to finish the other books I have started. It just may take longer than I initially thought.
As a way to start the New Year, here is a quote from Words Old and New by Dr. John Brown (1785-1858).

As a way to start the New Year, here is a quote from Words Old and New by Dr. John Brown (1785-1858).
The ground of the sinner's hope never varies. It is 'the same yesterday, today, and forever.' The ground of the hopes of the accomplished saint, who, by the word, and providence, and Spirit of God, has been made meet for that inheritance on which he is about to enter, is precisely the same as when a hopelessly lost sinner, driven from all the false confidences in which he had been accustomed to seek and find shelter, 'he fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before him in the gospel,' and found it. Our first hope is our last hope: 'the beginning of our confidence' is the end of our confidence.
You will benefit from Spiritual Depression. I may try to read it again.
ReplyDeleteOur family was in bed by 9:00 on New Year's Eve. With the three little ones keeping us so busy, I can barely stay up that late!
