Providence on the pitcher's mound

God orders all events in this entire universe, but sometimes His providence flies below our radar. However, we were privileged to see His providence unfold before our eyes.

Last Thursday was a typical muggy night for a softball game. When we arrived, the coach for our team was on the mound pitching the first inning. He was doing well, even throwing some strikes. That's pretty good for someone who is 69 years old. However, he began to look a little wobbly on his feet. Immediately folks from our church as well as the other team gathered around him to pray. He was still a little unsteady, so several brothers supported him as he walked off the field. Not much further, he started to pass out. It just happened that a player on the opposing team was an EMT/fire fighter with the station that just happened to be right around the corner. First aid was initiated, and a call was made for help. Thankfully he regained consciousness quickly. A fire truck was quickly on the scene followed by an ambulance which took him to the hospital for tests.

In God's mercy, our brother did not pass out while driving his car endangering his life. He collapsed at the softball game surrounded by his church family and by other believers one of whom happened to be an EMT. If he had not collapsed, he wouldn't have been hospitalize and tested thoroughly. A medical condition would not have been discovered until perhaps it was too late. He's not out of the woods yet, but we even as we continue to pray for him and his family, we are praising God for His amazing providence.

Why would anyone want to have it any other way?

  1. Once again, the answer is absolutely not! Praise God for his merciful providence. Thank you!

  2. You know, Pilgrim mommy, I frequently deal with skeptics and atheists on line. I know exactly how they would respond if they were to read your post: "Well, if your God exists, why did he allow the man to have that medical condition in the first place?" Then, they would follow up with some remark about how Christians are always atributing events to their imaginary "sky-daddy" and ignorantly claiming, "Goddidit."

We know that in reality all events are governed by the providential hand of God (whose non-existence is not even conceiveable), and, in ways that we may not yet see, are for His glory and our good.

Have prayed and will pray for your friend.

p.s. (Funny, the Captcha word verification is "damphole." I think I've been through some communities that deserve that title. I'm glad I live in the desert. : )

  3. Maybe atheists/skeptics have to put a spin on a story like this because they can't conceive of something outside of themselves that is bigger and better and more worthy of worship than man. So every circumstance in life is defined by the supremacy of man and his desires. The idea of a sovereign God would be like a fish trying to understand what it was like to be dry. But for those who have been redeemed, it opens up a new and glorious perspective.
