A month of thanksgiving #5

I'm thankful for laughter and humor.  It may seem a stretch, but I think theology affected my sense of humor or lack thereof.

There was a time when I thought I would never laugh or even smile again.  I also had a very low view of God's sovereignty.  But God mercifully opened my eyes through His word, 2 pivotal sermons, and 3 Puritan paperbacks.  His decrees were not subservient to or dependent upon human acquiescence.  He was fully in control and directing all things including my circumstances and would use them for my good and His glory.

The nagging sense that  it was up to me to make it through the Christian life was gone.  The fear that God's will could be thwarted by man was gone as well.  I found rest for the first time, and it changed my life.  It also changed my sense of humor. My daughter even says that I smile differently as a Calvinist.  We've certainly laughed a lot more these last 2 years.

There are times when I'm sad and cry.  I still get fearful and grumpy.  But joy and laughter seem to come much more easily because I'm resting in an absolutely sovereign God.

  3. I'm such a serious person, Persis, so I'm thankful, too, for the gift of laughter! It is wonderful to be able to reflect on how God used things in our lives to open our eyes to His truths. I love your perspective that we can laugh more because we are resting in His sovereign Hand. Beautiful, friend!

  5. I’m thankful for laughter, too. And for Tim Hawkins. That’s a very funny clip you posted. He always makes me laugh.

Interestingly enough, I haven’t really understood God’s sovereignty until the last few years either (not that I have a full grip on it now!) but it has given me such peace to finally realize that HE is in control, and I don’t have to be.

  7. Amen! I agree. I am thankful for laughter and humor, too!

Makes me think of Hebrews 1:9. Jesus was anointed with the "oil of joy."

  8. Amen! I love a good ole belly roll form time to time!
Yes I live in Delaware--the little town of Milford--about an hour from UD. These days it has the reputation of being one of the partyingist Universities in the USA! It is really sad. I had a fiend whose daughter was valedictorian of her class and had a scholarship to go there. She lasted 2 or 3 days and had to leave! She just could not stand the brazen immorality there and a particular prof who hated God and Christians.

  9. Persis, I wish you could hang out around our house for awhile. We do get a little wild and crazy with our humor sometimes!

Our pastor was in improve comedy in Hollywood before Seminary - He's very sober minded in the pulpit, but behind the scenes? Wow! He splits our gut laughing!

I'm so happy that Christ (and Calvin) put a spring in your step and a smile on your face!

    Love you my friend!
