A month of thanksgiving #8

I am thankful for the reminder that the only treasure worth cherishing is Christ.  In yesterday's sermon, we were exhorted from 1 Timothy 6 to find our contentment in Christ alone.  We should be content with and thankful for God's material blessings, but we need to value Him more than these things.  If we prize Christ, the accumulation of stuff in this life, the pursuit of the American Dream and "Your Best Life Now" will not drive us.  Our contentment in Christ will safeguard us when we are tempted by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  If we prize Him above all things, we will be rich in good works that spring from our love for Him, not merely rich in possessions.

I don't want Christ as my treasure to just be a Piperism in my vocabulary. I pray that the Holy Spirit would make it a reality.

  2. Persis,
Great encouragement, friend. These good gifts can become idols, and we can cherish them more than the Giver. Trials often strip us of everything else, so we learn to find contentment in Him alone. It's a daily struggle not to have my affections more focused on the things, and I pray, too, that Christ would truly be my greatest treasure.

  3. Sounds like an awesome sermon, Persis. Thank you for sharing. The only thing that matters is that we be found in Christ -- everything else is sinking sand.

  4. Such a timely reminder, Persis, as we are beginning to be inundated with catalogs of every description with their glossy pictures and seductive words.

  6. Me too Persis! Sadly for those without Christ, this really is merely "Their Best Life Now".

Thank you for the encouraging reminder.
