Hymn List

Here's my top 10 hymn list:

  1. My hope is built on nothing less - Edward Mote. I appreciate this hymn much more since we have been going through Hebrews on Sundays. The verses take so much of their imagery from Hebrews. "My anchor holds within the veil"
  2. And can it be that I should gain - Charles Wesley. "No condemnation now I dread"
  3. Arise, my soul, arise - Charles Wesley. "In confidence I now draw nigh and Father, Abba Father, cry"
  4. All hail the power of Jesus name - Edward Perronet. I love both the Coronation and Diadem tunes. I know the songs around the throne in heaven will be much better, but I can't sing this song without thinking about that scene.
  5. Like a river glorious - Frances Ridley Havergal. "They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true."
  6. When I survey the wondrous cross - Isaac Watts. "Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown"
  7. Jesus I am resting, resting - Jean Sophie Pigott. (see below)
  8. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds - John Newton. "My Life, my Lord, my Way, my End accept the praise I bring"
  9. God moves in a mysterious way - William Cowper. "Behind a frowning providence, He hides a smiling face"
  10. A mighty fortress is our God - Martin Luther. "His Kingdom is forever"
I have a special hymn memory. I would sing hymns to my daughter at bedtime when she was a baby/toddler. I remember one evening when she was about 18 months old. I had been singing "Jesus I am resting, resting." I thought she was going to fall asleep so I stopped after the first verse. She surprised me by reciting the second verse to me. Needless to say, I was stunned. I sang the third verse and then she recited the fourth. She doesn't remember this, but I will always treasure this memory. Who knows what the Holy Spirit has stored up in her heart?
