16 Reasons I Really LIke my Teenager!

I borrowed this idea from my friend, Trisha, because it's Monday evening, we had a full day, and I'm too tired to come up with something original because we were up late talking last night. Also I like this idea, because there's a notion that once your child turns 13, he/she is taken over by the body-snatching aliens from the planet Rebellionus. By the grace of God, this doesn't have to be a forgone conclusion.

Okay, so here goes:

1. She's not a picky eater and is willing to try almost anything.  She had a fondness for sushi of the raw variety at an early age, and she doesn't mind leftovers.

2. She lets me borrow her clothes, and vice versa within reason. I stay away from things that are too youthful, and she won't borrow things that are too (ahem) mature.

3. She still calls me "Mommy".

4. She doesn't think I'm old. Or nuts. And is not embarrassed to do Zumba with me.

5. We have so many private jokes that if one of us was abducted by the body snatchers, we'd know in an instant.

6. I love it when out of the blue she will tell me, "I'm so glad you're my mommy."

7. She doesn't want to ape being older in dress or manner.

8. God is teaching her contentment. The latest fad, music, or fashion isn't on her radar. When it comes to fashion, she often wonders what happened to the rest of the garment.

9. She's my confidant and vice versa. She also doesn't mind getting bombarded with quotes from whatever book I'm reading. In fact, she likes discussing theology and has some great insights.

10. She prays to not be the typical ornery teen.

11. She doesn't want to get past the gospel and knows I need it too.

12. She will give me a gentle reproof, elbow to the ribs, or bop on the head when I start to revert to pre-God-is-sovereign hand-wringing.

13. She loves the church. Due to visitation, she is away every other Sunday, so she prays for the service while she is away and is eager to hear a summary of the sermon.

14. She is not bitter towards God for what happened to her parents but trusts His sovereignty.

15. She still loves her dad and prays for him and his wife. The remaining time for court-ordered visitation is not a hardship to endure, but an opportunity to share the true, biblical gospel.

16. She isn't a statistic but an evidence of the redeeming grace of God. I met a sister who had been through an especially difficult divorce. She shared with me that children of divorce don't have to be another ruined-life statistic, and it's true. It's certainly not because I have been a model parent (far from it!) or had a perfect child. From beginning to end, God alone gets all the glory.

Hurrah for private jokes! We have plenty of those in our family, too. And we don't explain them to anyone... because, well, what are private jokes for? You can laugh your head off while your neighbor sits there wondering what the heck is so funny. :D

What a joy your Lydia is. I sure hope I can meet you both this side of glory. You are very blessed, and so is she to have you for her momma.

(oh, and.. "She lets me borrow her clothes, and vice versa within reason" - That you can wear the same size is something foreign to me completely" - Now that's somethin' to smile about! ;)
